Sit-to-Stand – Why is so important for everyone to practice

Ok. I must say I am a big fan of sit to stand exercises for my patients with neurological conditions.

Physiotherapy is an integral component of the management of patients with traumatic brain injury, stroke and many other neurological conditions as well as geriatric rehabilitation.

In my opinion upright position routine or sit to stand practice must be included in to the program for every patient - from maximum support using the tilt table to minimum support/independent parctice.

Many times I was asked by my patients and families, why this repetitive movement against gravity is so important? It is fundamental for every single individual with or without neurological condition. If it safe to do so, remember it need to happen frequently. Every day.

There is many studies in relation of patients up right/standing position taking in to the account exercise/fitness training; sensory stimulation and coma arousal; functional skills training; behavioural modification; casting, splinting and associated therapies; respiratory physiotherapy or rehabilitation.

Our ability to stand against the gravity in upright position can be modified and supported from many perspectives.

Researchers reported that 42% to 43% of the elderly subjects they surveyed had difficulty getting up from a chair and that the ease of rising from a chair was the primary concern these subjects had when selecting a chair. As well as 44.2% of patients with Parkinson disease and 27.3% of patients with spinocerebellar degeneration have difficulty rising from a chair. These numbers are large and has an impact on activities of daily living.

There is a massive overlap in our system stimulation while we stand and walk. The ability to get up from a chair is an important component in maintaining independence. Not mention all health benefits from ambulation for healthy individuals as well as these with altered abilities. We all massively benefit from upright position and locomotion.

Standing up play a crucial role to support and maintain good health and mobility as well as mental state.

Remember, this this complex movement is a game changer for health and wellbeing. If you not sure how to do it safely, talk to your trusted physiotherapist, doctor or nurse. We always happy to advice and facilitate appropriate program to keep you healthy.
